Formed in Milan in 1981 under Ettore Sottsass. Named after a Bob Dylan song, Stuck Inside of Mobile with the Memphis Blues Again, played on repeat during the group's first meeting.
The furniture was loud on purpose. Laminate surfaces and clashing colors carried a lot of the weight, and the forms themselves were often asymmetrical with little functional reason behind it. It read as a direct provocation aimed at the design establishment's love of restraint. The group disbanded in 1988, but the visual language shaped a lot of 1980s design and keeps resurfacing whenever minimalism starts to feel exhausted.
